The GIFT of FAITH…where will it take you? The GIFT of FAITH literally got us to Costa Rica, in the face of all kinds of opposition. We ended up starting two Christian schools there, which are still in operation! The gift didn’t fail!
From the moment we KNEW it was what God wanted for us to move, we still had a lot to do—it wasn’t an overnight change. We had a house to sell, a couple of cars, and lots of stuff to find a new home for. Family members didn’t want us to go. There were friends to leave behind, and a lot that we had to let go of. BUT, there was a whole lot that we gained (that’s a story for a different time!). Despite all the naysayers and opposition, we held on. Looking back, we can see that the GIFT of FAITH was working for us. Otherwise, we would’ve given up ten times, to say the least. When we think about all the negative comments, flowing tears, and people who doubted what we were doing, it would have been a normal reaction to just throw in the towel. But because of the GIFT of FAITH in operation through us, that thought never even crossed our minds. When we think about that time in our lives, we often look back and wonder why we didn’t just let the dream die—after all, the deck was stacked against us, so to speak. Let me give you some details. When our house went on the market, NO ONE WAS BUYING anything. People kept saying we would NEVER sell our house. But this is what I did because of the GIFT of FAITH. As a way for me to take action to support what I was saying and believing, I started cleaning out our closets, selling some furniture, and giving some things away. In fact, we hosted a huge garage sale where we sold so many things. During that sale, a lady I had never met walked over to me at the pay table and handed me a check for $500 to help us move overseas. A family member was sitting by, and it was what she needed to see, too! Our realtor came to show our house 22 times before anyone showed interest…that’s a lot of house-cleaning, ladies! It seemed like the house would never sell, but we KNEW IT WOULD. Again, the GIFT of FAITH in action. It never crossed my mind that we wouldn’t get it sold. Around that time, a friend of mine named Jill shared a prophetic word with me, and this is what she said: “Don’t give up! At the exact right time, the house will sell and everything else will sell along with the house. In other words, it will all come together at the same time.” Well, no matter how confident we feel, we can all use a little faith boost! And that’s exactly what my friend did for me when she shared that prophetic word, through the GIFT of PROPHECY (we will save that gift for later!). According to that prophetic word, everything happened. Someone who came to see the house a while back, wanted to come again. Suddenly, we had families interested in buying our two cars. Those were the big ticket items that needed to go, and they went! The rest is history. Sincerely, I thank God for the GIFT of FAITH. So, this GIFT of FAITH is in operation when you just believe you can do something God is asking you to do, but there is really no human way it can happen. There is nothing in your life showing the evidence that you can do what you intend to do. Yet, you believe whole-heartedly it will come to pass! And because you believe that, you move in that direction with your time and actions. I’ve seen this one happen mostly when I’m in a group of believers, like in a church meeting. In the church setting someone who operates in this gift will go to the pastor, and share something like this:
“I believe God is speaking to me that someone here today has a terrible headache, and God wants to heal them.” OR “God is telling me that someone here is going through an awful divorce, and you’re wondering how things are going to turn out. If you’ll turn to God today, He says He will make all things new.” The pastor can then decide if that is the leading of the Lord, and he can announce it to the group (or let the person give the word of knowledge) if he trusts the source. So, the WORD of KNOWLEDGE has a place in the church world, for sure. In fact, God intended that it be a gift in operation…why? Because if you’re the person with the terrible headache, and someone you don’t know or haven’t shared with goes to the front of the church and gives that WORD of KNOWLEDGE, then you know it’s God speaking…because no one else could’ve known what you’re facing. Only God. These gifts are ALWAYS intended to draw the unbeliever to Jesus. (1 Cor. 14:24-25). Remember, the WORD of KNOWLEDGE is not only for inside the church walls…it’s for everyday life, too, as you go about hoping to win people and show them how they should follow Jesus. In my own life, here are some ways the WORD of KNOWLEDGE has operated: I was a teacher in our schools for several years, and I would often know when kids were cheating, copying others’ work, etc. How did I know? Through the WORD of KNOWLEDGE. Suddenly, I would have knowledge of their cheating, without knowing it from a human source. The Holy Spirit would tell me. I did not know because I saw someone cheating with my own two eyes…no, I knew because the of the WORD of KNOWLEDGE. I am also part of our administrative team, and through the WORD of KNOWLEDGE I often know when teachers or families are deciding to leave the school. Again, I don’t know because someone told me—I only know because God tells me about it, through the WORD of KNOWLEDGE. Now, I should be clear about this—GOD DOES NOT share with me things that would be hurtful to another person. Knowing things like this is not something I can turn on and off at will. If He decides to share something with me, then He does it. But God is not in the business of spreading dirty secrets about other people, no…nothing like that. If I lose my car keys, or misplace something else, I often know where they are after asking Him for help…and via the WORD of KNOWLEDGE, I suddenly know where I left them. My husband has been trying to fix/repair something before, and even though it was tripping him up for hours, after asking God for help he has “suddenly known” exactly what to do because of the WORD of KNOWLEDGE. Remember, God doesn’t show favoritism at all—what He’s done for me, He wants to do for you too! I promised I would share stories from my own life, so here goes!
When I think of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, I think about hearing or seeing them at a church meeting or when a group of believers are together in one place. That’s definitely where you would normally find them…but they are not limited to that space. It wasn’t until I moved to Central America that I figured out how practical these gifts can be for everyday life and decision-making. They are definitely NOT limited to the four walls of the church. In fact, if you’re a believer right now and you’ve made Jesus your Lord, you qualify for these gifts! There’s just one catch: you have to BELIEVE they are for the church TODAY. And you are the church! You must be filled with the Holy Spirit of God (Acts 2, 10, 19). You should also know that not EVERY believer operates in ALL of the gifts…because it is the Holy Spirit who gives to each one as HE chooses. But we have the guarantee that we canfunction in at least one of the gifts: But to each one is given the manifestation of the [Holy] Spirit [the evidence, the spiritual illumination of the Spirit] for good and profit. (1 Cor. 12:7) He decides WHO operates in each gift, and He decides WHEN He wants them to operate. We should always be listening to the nudging of the Holy Spirit, but we can’t fake the operation—we have to be nudged by him (or impressed to share or do something). All these [gifts, achievements, abilities] are inspired and brought to pass by one and the same [Holy] Spirit, Who apportions to each person individually [exactly] as He chooses. (1 Cor. 12:11) Listen, people will come to Jesus left and right when you share a WORD of KNOWLEDGE for them—something they KNOW there is NO WAY you could’ve known about them on your own. I’ve seen this happen before. But let’s get back to the WORD of WISDOM specifically. A WORD of WISDOM is when God gives you specific wisdom about how to handle a situation, how to solve a problem, or you just suddenly know how to fix something that confused you before. I’ve had this happen in my own life. Let me explain: my husband and I have been living in Costa Rica for the last 12 years, and we run two Christian bilingual private schools. Basically, we solve problems for a living. Well, that’s not EVERYTHING we do, but we often have tofigure out solutions when the need comes up! A couple of years ago, we had a little problem to solve at our preschool. We had a couple of kids that needed to be moved to a different classroom, but there was only so much space in each class. Remember, we’re talking about kids who don’t usually speak English as a first language, so you have to keep in mind that they need to be able to understand their teacher, too. If that teacher doesn’t have a lot of Spanish, it can be tough. Well, I had been turning it all over in my mind for a few days, when SUDDENLY I just KNEW what to do! So I did it, and it worked! It had to be a God thing—or rather, a WORD of WISDOM. One time we needed more space at our main campus. There was no way we could physically build a new classroom. I was perplexed and didn’t have a clue about how to fix things. I had asked the Lord what we could do, and then some time passed. Suddenly, when I was at work one day, I just knew exactly what to do. In a moment, I knew I could move a younger classroom from our main campus to our preschool, and that would give the main campus the extra classroom it really needed. That, my friends, was the WORD of WISDOM in operation. And I wasn’t in a church meeting. God can give you a WORD of WISDOM about how to handle a difficult child in your life. You don’t want to be yelling all the time, and God can show you exactly how to discipline, or even the right way to react in tough situations. Maybe you’ve got a problem to solve at work, or there’s a relationship in your life you want to repair. Well, the giver of all good things stands at the door, ready to talk with you about it. Why don’t you ask Him to? You’ll get your answer. And it might not seem super dynamic to someone else, but if you’re able to quickly solve a problem because of the WORD of WISDOM, you’ll be so happy. My examples might not seem super flashy or mind-blowing; BUT I can tell you that when I got those solutions, it took a load of stress off and I felt so relieved! Here’s the good news—I’m not special! God doesn’t show favoritism (Esphes. 6:9, Col. 3:25). He wants to be helpful to you, too, in your own life. Ask Him. Find out more about the GIFTS of the Holy Spirit. Desire them. Get filled with the Holy Spirit, so your life as a Christian can be filled with strength and power (Acts 2, 10, 19). (If you missed my intro to today’s blog, visit Created 2 Conquer on FaceBook or Instagram to read what I wrote…you’ll have the backstory). He visto esto suceder antes. Dios no muestra favoritismo (Esfes. 6:9, Col. 3:25). In some circles, it almost feels wrong to talk about the things you want and desire out of life. People might look at you funny if you talk about your hopes and dreams…why is that? What’s the big deal anyway? Can’t I have a dream in my heart and talk about the things I want out of life?
Yes, you can! What’s bigger is that God is behind you all the way. Soak in what the Bible says here. Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He will give you the desires and secret petitions of your heart. (Psalm 37:4) Do not fret or have any anxiety about anything, but in every circumstance and in everything, by prayer and petition (definite requests), with thanksgiving, continue to make your wants known to God. (Philippians 4:6) Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! (Matthew 7:9-11) It’s nice to know that God DOES CARE about the things we want and desire. Those are not dirty words. It’s nice to know He cares about giving us good gifts. At the same time, we should follow Matthew 6:33: But seek (aim at and strive after) first of all His kingdom and His righteousness (His way of doing and being right), and then all these things taken together will be given you besides. Clearly, the key is going after the things of God FIRST…in other words, the things that matter to Him the most. I believe that loving other people, and being kind to those around us is a really important thing. In fact, God cares more about how we treat people than other things that might seem “big” in the Christian faith. I mean, you can be super talented and have a gift for teaching, or a gift for singing, or some other gift that always seems to be popular with people. BUT if you don’t have love, you’re just a noisy, clanging symbol. (1 Corinthians 13). If you usually don’t think about loving others, this is a good time to start. Remember, your faith WORKS BY LOVE (Galatians 5:6). So love, and treating others with love, is a big idea where God is concerned. I’ve had to learn a lot about this personally, because my natural temperament is very task oriented and thrives on the satisfaction of a job completed and well-done. This means I can sometimes move too fast through my day, and not take the time with others that I should. I can come off as rude when that happens, and that’s not what I want. God does care about what we want or desire, and he certainly wants to give us good things. But first, WE should care about the things that are important to Him. Over the years, I’ve learned that I can’t ask myself how I feel about everything going on in my life. In other words, if I don’t love everything going on right now, I don’t really consider how that makes me feel. It’s not a good idea for me to spend extra time pondering the things I don’t enjoy about my life or my work. Think about it.
No matter what you’ve decided to do with your life—even if you are working your dream job and feel like everything is fitting into place—there will always be some aspect of it that you don’t really enjoy, or even find annoying. Certain things will always be a drudgery, and you won’t want to do them. It can be like this with your diet or other healthy decisions you’re trying to make. Let me give you an example. I usually want to snack after dinner, even though I’m not supposed to. (You know, it’s that whole intermittent fasting thing where you try to go without food for a certain number of hours to be healthy…you should check out the research!) Well, it isn’t very much fun some days, but you can definitely get into the habit of not eating during certain times if you work at it. That said, there are times I still want to eat something yummy in the evening when I shouldn’t. But I have told myself this before: “Brigit, you don’t even have to get upset about it. You’re just not going to eat anything else tonight, and you don’t have to have an opinion about it. Just move on.” Maybe this doesn’t make sense to you at all but let me make this point. In the Book of Romans, we read this: So then, brethren, we are debtors, but not to the flesh [we are not obligated to our carnal nature], to live [a life ruled by the standards set up by the dictates] of the flesh. (Romans 8:12) When we hear about the “flesh” in the Bible, God is speaking to us about our unredeemed nature as human beings. He’s talking about our soul (the mind, will, and emotions) and our body. (1 Thess. 5:23) This has really helped me…because there was a time when I thought all Christians just automatically felt like doing the right thing, and I felt weird or wrong because I didn’t. I wondered how they always managed to do good. The truth is, they were more likely choosing to do things they didn’t feel like doing. I’m not saying it’s like that EVERY TIME, but let’s face it—there are times we need to say the right thing or do the right thing and we’ve got no emotions to support it. We have to realize that we are not obligated to our carnal nature—we can do the right thing, even if we don’t feel like it. This is a pretty big life lesson, if you’ll listen to me today. I like it, because it really saves on the whole emotional drain we experience when we get really good and worked up about something. We just don’t have to have an emotional reaction if bad things happen, or something pops up we really don’t want to do. As an act of the human will, you can decide to do the thing you should do, even if there are no excited emotions to back it up. I guess that’s how those amazing Christians get it done—they’ve discovered the key. It’s okay if you don’t feel like doing the right thing. You can do it anyway. |
